Outlander series in order5/11/2023 It began in Scotland, at an ancient stone circle. How far will a woman travel to find a father, a lover a destiny? Across seas, across time across the grave itself. In 1746, Claire Fraser made a perilous journey through time, leaving her young husband to die at Culloden, in order to protect their unborn child. But sometimes forever is shorter than one thinks. Either prospect pales beside the pain of loss - his wife is gone. Jamie Fraser is lying on the battlefield of Culloden, where he rises wounded, to face execution or imprisonment. Here Claire plans to reveal a truth as stunning as the events that gave it birth: about the mystery of an ancient circle of standing stones, about a love that transcends the boundaries of time, and about James Fraser But now she is returning with her grown daughter to the majesty of Scotland's mist-shrouded hills. But one afternoon, Claire walks through a circle of standing stones and vanishes into 1743, where the first person she meets is a British army officerįor twenty years Claire Randall has kept her secrets. It’s a second honeymoon, a chance to learn how war has changed them and to re-establish their loving marriage. 1946, and Claire Randall goes to the Scottish Highlands with her husband Frank.

Contrasting with this tale of love and self-destruction is the vividly observed story of Levin, a man striving to find contentment and a meaning to his life - and also a self-portrait of Tolstoy himself. The pillow book shonagon5/10/2023 A contemporary of Murasaki Shikibu, the author of The Tale of Genji, this small diary brings an added dimension to Murasakis timeless and seminal work. The Pillow Book of Sei Shonagon is one of the earliest examples of diary literature whose passages chronicle the events of the court calendar, the ceremonies and celebrations specific to Teishis court, and the vignettes that provide brilliantly drawn glimpses into the manners and foibles of the aristocracy. This pillow book reflects the confident aesthetic judgments of Shonagon and her ability to create prose that crossed into the realm of the poetic. A common custom of the time period, courtiers used to keep notes or a diary in a wooden pillow with a drawer. The Pillow Book of Sei Shonagon was a product of a tenth-century courtiers experiences in the palace of Empress Teishi. Inside this bubble, a subtle and beautiful world was in operation, and its inhabitants were tied to the moment, having no interest in the future and disdain for the past. About the Book The beauty of his prose captures the artistic spirit of a brilliant and fascinating woman.-from the foreword by Dennis Washburn Book Synopsis Japan in the 10th century stood physically and culturally isolated from the rest of the world. Holy Sh*t by Melissa Mohr5/10/2023 She explores obscenities in ancient Rome-which were remarkably similar to our own-and unearths the history of religious oaths in the Middle Ages, when swearing (or not swearing) an oath was often a matter of life and death. With humor and insight, Melissa Mohr takes listeners on a journey to discover how "swearing" has come to include both testifying with your hand on the Bible and calling someone a *#$& * when they cut you off on the highway. Holy Sh*t tells the story of two kinds of swearing-obscenities and oaths-from ancient Rome and the Bible to today. But swearing is also a uniquely well-suited lens through which to look at history, offering a fascinating record of what people care about on the deepest levels of a culture-what's divine, what's terrifying, and what's taboo. Whether they express anger or exhilaration, are meant to insult or to commend, swear words perform a crucial role in language. Almost everyone swears, or worries about not swearing, from the two-year-old who has just discovered the power of potty mouth to the grandma who wonders why every other word she hears is obscene. The remains of the day book reviews5/9/2023 Set in the 1960s, an ageing butler is given the week off by his wealthy American employer. On the face of it, the plotline sounds pretty basic. That, I suspect, is the reason I hadn’t yet picked one up.Īs it turns out, ‘The Remains of the Day’ was an inspired present. But it does mean that it’s difficult to know what to expect from one of his novels. It’s unusual to have such a wide variety of subject matter so universally praised. He has always seemed a bit of a mystery figure to me, having written books ranging from fantasy (‘The Buried Giant’) to period pieces (‘The Remains of the Day’) to a romance about clones (‘Never Let Me Go’). This is the first book by Kazuo Ishiguro that I’ve ever read. Proof, if ever it were needed, that nagging does work. This year I was rewarded with a book as well. He doesn’t like to celebrate V-Day, but I demand a card yearly. ‘The Remains of the Day’ was Mr Shelf’s Valentine’s present this year. Get yourself a man who buys you books instead of chocolates. |
